With deep sorrow and profound gratitude, we announce the passing of Brian Doerksen, a gifted songwriter, worship leader, teacher, husband, father, and friend whose life and ministry have touched people around the world.
Brian’s journey was marked by a rare ability to transform faith into song. Through his writing and leadership, he gave voice to prayers, struggles, celebrations, and moments of surrender that became part of the worship language of countless believers. His music crossed borders, generations, and denominations, becoming a source of encouragement and hope for millions.
Yet Brian’s greatest treasures were never found on stages or in the recognition that came with his music. Significant though they were with songs like ‘Come, Now Is The Time To Worship’, ‘Faithful One’, ‘Purify My Heart’ and ‘Refiner’s Fire’ being just a few. They were found in the people he loved most, his wife, Joyce, and their family.

Joyce was not only his beloved wife and life partner, but a steady source of love, strength, encouragement, and companionship throughout every season of his journey. Together, Brian and Joyce shared a beautiful story of faith, family, creativity, and commitment. Those who knew Brian well understood that his family was at the heart of who he was and that the love he poured into them was one of the greatest expressions of his life.
As a husband and father, Brian cherished the ordinary moments as much as the extraordinary ones. He found joy in family, friendship, and the relationships that shaped him. His legacy is not only written in the songs he gave the world, but also in the love, wisdom, and faith he passed on to those closest to him.
Beyond his accomplishments as a musician, Brian was known for his humility, compassion, and commitment to serving others. He invested in worship leaders, encouraged emerging artists, and continually used his platform to point people toward God rather than himself.
His influence on worship music in Canada and around the world is immeasurable. Yet those who had the privilege of knowing him will remember not only the songs, but the man behind them, a husband devoted to Joyce, a father who loved his family deeply, and a friend whose kindness left a lasting mark.
As the Church grieves this tremendous loss, we also give thanks for a life faithfully lived. Brian leaves behind a legacy of music, ministry, and faith that will continue to inspire generations to come.
AStepFWD Founder & CEO, O’Neil Dennis shared, “I met with Brian and Miraka online late last year as we discussed about him coming over to the UK this May and what that would look like. He was a lovely and gentle soul even with such a huge catalogue and legacy of worship-defining music. I was really looking forward to picking up the conversation again and I’m truly saddened to hear the news of his passing.”
Our deepest love, prayers, and condolences are with Joyce, their children, their extended family, and all who are mourning the loss of someone who brought so much beauty and hope into the world.
Brian’s earthly song has ended, but the worship he inspired will continue to rise.
