Joy. Freedom. Untamed. These words hit you square in the face on hearing – no, experiencing – the music of Rend Collective. It’s not often one encounters the work of an artist (or in this case, a band of artists) and you immediately feel like you know them… like, really, really know them. It is no wonder then that this band (formally known as Rend Collective Experiment), have gained global recognition since their official album debut as Rend Collective in 2010.
With regards to sound, I find it difficult to box this Northern Irish band into a specific genre and I have tried hard in this write up not to refer to them as the ‘Northern Irish, folk, rock, worship band’. For one, I think it looks quite tacky and still doesn’t quite encapsulate all that this award-winning band is and does. What I would say though is their sound is certainly distinct. You can’t mistake it for anyone else and they have stayed true to this sound in new song offering and the UK Christian Chart top track ‘Revival Anthem’ .
Rend Collective who has since expanded to include a kids’ ministry arm, do not mince words and are very clear about their mission. Every word and every chord of every song seems intentional. On the release of ‘Revival Anthem’, they say this: “We’ve heard of so-called “secular Europe” – we just don’t believe it. God is on the move and we will not be brainwashed by the propaganda of the Enemy that tells us otherwise”.
Led by drummer/percussionist Gareth Gilkeson, Rend Collective have toured around the world and have performed alongside other world-renowned artists in the Christian music scene like Chris Tomlin and Kari Jobe.
