“As a man thinketh in his heart so he is” – Proverbs 23:7
The relevance of the above scripture is profound. It has stood the test of time.
This proverb is not only known to believers but it has managed to penetrate self-help literature and New Age thought. James Allen’s classic 1903 book “As A Man Thinketh” is a prime example of this.
The law directly influences the human experience and has resonated with figures throughout history.
Have you ever dreaded an event or outcome and ruminated on it so much that it became a reality?
If your thoughts become the words you speak, which in turn become your behaviour followed by your values and finally destiny, then where to start is with your thoughts.
Cognitive behavioural therapy is a mode of management for anxiety, depression, PTSD and other mental health conditions. It relies on sessions with a therapist with the aim of changing the way you think so how you feel and how you behave change in turn with that.
As Christians we are urged by the Apostle Paul in Romans 12:2 to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. There is a constant war with the world around us. We are being fed its statutes on a daily basis. It is imperative that we fill our minds regularly with the scriptures to overcome this agenda.
In its simplest form, to meditate on something really means to ponder and keep it in mind for an extended period of time. You will change your life when you opt to meditate on godly things.
Philippians 4:8 says:
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.“
As we think on these things, are lives change not only for the better but the meditation of our hearts and speech of our mouths become acceptable to the Almighty.
Finally, I ask us as believers to keep watch on our thoughts and to gauge them with the standard of God’s Word.
I pray that the Holy Spirit will let the peace of God which surpasses understanding guard our hearts and minds in Christ as we keep his thoughts (scriptures) at the core of our being.
