Pastor Agu Irukwu, has announced that he is stepping down from his role as head of the Redeemed Christian Church of God UK. He shares his reasons for doing so in the video above. Pastor Agu will continue to serve as Senior Pastor of Jesus House, based in Brent, northwest London.
Jesus House church has been in the news recently following Labour leader Keir Starmer’s visit to the church on Good Friday. Following his visit, the LGBQT sector of his party complained, stating Starmer had gone to a church they deemed to have ‘controversial LCGQT views’.
Starmer then tweeted it was a mistake to go to the church, deleted the video he had posted on Twitter praising the church and apologised to Labour Party members.
Pastor Agu Irukwu spoke to Premier Radio about the media storm and how it has impacted the church. He said:
“As a child growing up in a Commonwealth nation, one aspect of Great Britain which I found most admirable was its promotion of strong values, including fairness and justice.”
“Over the past 48 hours, I have been disturbed to see these values eroded, especially in the courtroom of social media; we have felt prosecuted, judged, and sentenced unfairly.
“Some of the language that has been directed at us can only be described as vile, abusive, hateful, and possibly criminal. It is tantamount to cyberbullying and the timing of this attack during Easter, one of the most important events in the Christian calendar, was particularly upsetting for us as a congregation.
“But Easter is also a time of forgiveness, hope and reconciliation, so we are really keen that despite all that has happened, this can still be a gospel moment.”
