David Brent – Mustard Seed or Must Succeed?

There is a fine line between all out determination and blind delusion. After watching trailers of the new Ricky Gervais movie, David Brent: Life on the Road, audiences will probably feel that Brent falls within the murky toe-curling world of the deluded. With a new series of X-Factor just around the corner, movie box office takings will no doubt show that we Brits love to laugh at the misguided musical dreamer.

The rockumentary, or in the eyes of some critics, the mockumentary, is based on a Slough salesman’s hunger to hit the big leagues. Brent turns his back on a mundane existence and is totally and without any shadow of a doubt convinced that he is placed on this earth to become a music legend, in fact, one of the greatest of all time.

It is probably safe to assume that this movie will not result in an Oscar or Bafta, but then, 2016 is a year of great surprises. Remember Leicester City?

In my opinion, Gervais has spotted a commercial minefield in terms of spin-offs. Watch out for the album, music video and no doubt live tour based around the film. A pop star back in the day, he is no doubt equipped to deal with the music business and all it offers. Perhaps there is a thinly veiled attempt on his part to pick up on where his partially successful music career ended….back in the 1980’s, or was it the 90’s.

It is the sort of film that will probably not be shown at the church youth film night, but if you can get away with a convincing disguise and head down to the cinema you may just come away with a message.

The moral of the story?

Gospel, and all independent artists often face a moment of reflection where they wonder if their pursuit of music success is powered by the right motives. Depending on their faith, they go in one of two directions.

Faith the size of a mustard seed, we are told in biblical scripture, can achieve anything. But if you cross ‘that’ line, without spiritual guidance, you may find yourself trapped in your own obsession.

I am not here to endorse the movie or am certainly not part of the panel of film critics that have lifted or destroyed the Ricky Gervais big screen creation. My simple and humble question to all British Gospel artists out there is, how determined are you, and are you actually called?

Is David Brent deluded?…if you watch the movie, make up your own mind.
