The Church of England approves of Female Bishops!

Bishops debate

Many thought it was crazy that we live in a country where women couldn’t be bishops. This issue has fueled debates for centuries and finally the Church has approved.

The Church of England has formally adopted legislation which means its first female bishops could be ordained next year. The first women priests were ordained in 1994, but to date they have not been able to take on the Church’s most senior roles.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said the move meant the start of “a new way of being the church“.

But divisions remain between Anglicans who feel it is consistent with their faith and traditionalists who disagree. (BBC News, 17/11/14)

This is definitely a step in the right direction, and although it faces some opposition, many feel that this would have reflected Jesus’ empowering and respectful attitude towards women.

Are you glad that women will be able to become bishops? Let us know in the comments below!
