Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir has been singing in London churches since 2005, bringing the powerful and uplifting sound of gospel to Christian denominations where it isn’t often heard. Until Covid restrictions were introduced, they sang regularly in Farm Street Catholic Church in Mayfair and St James’s Anglican Church on Piccadilly.
They’re inspired by the great contemporary gospel artists: great names like Kirk Franklin, Donald Lawrence and Fred Hammond. Trey McLaughlin is also an influence and they love his arrangements made famous on Youtube.
They’re keen to support other groups and have made their chord charts, part-learning audio files, and lyric sheets available to others as part of their gospel music ‘toolkit’.
Soul Sanctuary has supported various social action causes: the fairtrade charity, Traidcraft; working alongside refugees, and those affected by the Grenfell Tower tragedy. They’ve made several appearances on BBC Radio and performed their gospel oratorio “The Resurrection” on Radio 2 in 2015. It tells the story of the events after Jesus’s death and features sixteen contemporary gospel songs. It’s been performed twice at London’s Jazz Cafe and to the inmates of Wandsworth Prison in 2018. The Kingdom Choir’s Karen Gibson heard the choir rehearse segments on the BBC TV show ‘Britain’s Easter Story’.
And they’re really proud that they’ve just finished working with Mica Paris on her upcoming album ‘Gospel’. Check out their two recordings: With All Your Soul and You Are The Key.
