REVIEW: Yemi Laja’s spoken word ‘The King in You’

Yemi Laja‘s beautiful immersive monologue ‘The King in You’ is a celebration of fathers, husbands, men, and the women who love them.

This video celebrates Yemi’s father and how the way he loves her is a reflection of our Heavenly father’s love for us. This heartfelt piece refers to her father as “Daddy” highlighting not only the intimacy of the relationship she has with her father, but the intimacy we can have with God our Father.

Given how many people struggle with absent, abusive, or ambivalent earthly fathers, this refreshing spoken word calls for us to reflect on the nature of our heavenly Father as our ‘daddy’ – one who takes care of us when we are sick, who helps prepare us for our future, and who loves us unconditionally through the thick and thin.

One of the lines in this monologue is: “Daddy, you excel at fatherhood. Oh, I’m not surprised – an apple does not fall far from the tree. The greatest mentor is your heavenly father”. The line signifies that not only can Yemi see how God is our father through her own father’s example, but she has realised that the reason her father is so good at fatherhood is because he relies on the Lord for guidance in how to be a father. This concept of fatherhood runs both ways – she can understand how God is our father through her father’s example, but her father is such a good father because he is reflective the example God has set for him.

The video of this powerful immersive monologue consists of a montage of photos and video clips of her and her father, as well as an inset video of her performing the piece at Celebration Church in West London.

This release comes after her piece ‘My Resurrection Story’ that premiered in May of this year. She described this spoken word as being “about the fall of man and the impact it had on man. The fall of man brought death upon man, but God in His infinite mercy sent His only begotten son, Jesus Christ to die for man and redeem man from sin, death, and the devil’s torment. The Spoken Word talks about how Jesus paid the ultimate price for man’s redemption and gave man access to eternal life and sonship with God. It further emphasizes the overwhelming victory that everyone who believes in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ has over the devil and all his schemes.”

Yemi Laja strives to use her creative abilities to help people discover their true selves and fulfil their purpose on earth. She uses coaching, music, spoken word and designs to achieve this purpose. She has performed her spoken word pieces at various platforms across London.

One of the verses that has inspired her on her creative journey is Habakkuk 2:2: “And the LORD answered me and said, Write the vision and make it plain upon tables that he may run that reads it.”
