Held on the first Friday of each month, Praise Party, a monthly Christian DJ-led club night in London, has now become fully entrenched in the scene’s regular event schedule. At Praise Party DJs mix the best in Gospel Club Classics, Christian Hip-hop, RnB, Grime, Afrobeats, Bashment, House & Garage along with Live Performances!
What started as a simple idea to facilitate those ‘young at heart’ with a desire to enjoy their faith after what can be a gruelling six and three-quarter days fighting an unseen enemy that never sleeps, Praise Party has emerged to be exactly what organisers hoped it would – an energetic respite where the celebration of God’s faithfulness is demonstrated in singing and dancing, much like the days of old.
Earlier this month I celebrated my birthday at Praise Party along with some friends from aStepFWD and boy was there energy in the room! I missed the Afrobeat section and the live performances much to my dismay, as the driver and aStepFWD Director, Michael Akinle, had totally forgotten about the ‘white theme’ and insisted on returning home to change. Something about being the ‘odd one out’ and he wasn’t shouting out Guvna B.
Still I was happy to be there, as I entered to the sounds of reggae and found that my feet had taken on a life of their own. I met old friends and new; saved and unsaved; young and old; and it made me appreciate even more the ethos behind Praise Party. There are so many things hinder unity in the Christian community with numerous churches and doctrines. Praise Party celebrates a common love for fellowship using music as its vehicle.
A common love that this generation and those for whom ‘age is just a number’ can certainly appreciate and embrace. We need more initiatives like this that are inter-generational and appeal to people across at least any genre divides that may exists in Gospel music.
Massive thanks again to the Praise Party team for ensuring myself and the June massive had a great birthday celebration. The next Praise Party will be held on Friday, 1st July.
