Emerging Nottingham-based singer-songwriter JERUB officially releases his honest and emotive new single, ‘Feel It’ on the 29th January. JERUB is a singer and writer based in Nottingham, UK. He began his journey as an artist in April 2019 when he released his debut single ‘Paint Me in Gold’. Blending a variety of genres from soul to alt-rock with Rnb/Pop influences, JERUB brings a combination of powerful vocals, heartfelt lyrics and magical melodies that resonate with a wide audience. Since then JERUB has garnered support from Dean Jackson with multiple first listens on BBC introducing East Midlands and National play on BBC6 Music.
Reflecting on his personal experience of 2020 JERUB pens a therapeutic reminder that no one can tell you how to feel about the things that hurt you. In this song, JERUB heeds his own advice and lets himself feel the pain of seeing Black men portrayed as dangerous and unimportant in mainstream media.
Speaking of the song, JERUB says “The journey of writing this song really helped me make sense of my emotions in the middle of a crazy year. I really struggled to process all the emotions when the videos of Black people being killed continued to circulate on the internet. I found that I had been bottling up lots of emotions and memories from moments that I experienced racism and had suppressed the feelings for so long. ‘Feel It’ is what came out when I decided to be honest with myself and those around me. For me,this song is more than expression, it’s an invitation to freedom…the big chorus at the end is like a declaration of freedom…it’s me saying that I’m not waiting to be given permission to feel it…I can give myself that permission and I hope listeners will hear this song and give themselves permission to feel what they feel.”
The song is authentic, anthemic and showcases JERUB’s incredible vocal ability and penmanship. The production matches the journey of the lyrics, from meditative to strong and declarative. The lyrics “but I can’t breathe” were triggered by the death of George Floyd whose killing changed the world and sparked a global awakening in regards to racial injustice. This song is a reminder of the impact that racism has on the mental health of minority groups and the importance of speaking out and being honest with yourself.
