We recently caught up with Eliza King, following the release of her debut album “The Pressing In”. This emerging Australian Christian artist, known for her vulnerable vocal performances and scripturally rich lyrics, has crafted an 11-track devotional worship album in collaboration with Brett Shaw. Reflective and intimate in tone, “The Pressing In“ explores the concept of beauty born through suffering, inviting listeners into moments of pressing in and friendship with Jesus. What has been one of your proudest moments in your journey so far?
My proudest moments are the small conversations I have with people who are impacted by my music, as this makes it all worth it for me. It is far less about milestones as an artist, and more about the individual stories of people who have encountered the Lord and His transformative presence through a song that I have felt led to write.

If music didn’t exist, what would you do?
I would be an English teacher full time! I currently work part time teaching in a Christian secondary school, and also love that part of my life.

What is the inspiration for this project?
Many of these songs reflect the challenges and trials that I’ve walked through over the past 2 years, and the journey the Lord has taken me on in learning to trust in Him and rely on Him completely.

What would you say are some of the main messages in the project?
Central to this project is the idea that beauty is born through suffering. Life (or God, in His sovereignty) sometimes presses in on us, and in this uncomfortable and painful process we may feel crushed and squeezed, but something of worth is always produced at the same time. Equally though, we are invited to ‘press in’ (pursue, seek, contend) for the calling and purposes of God in our own lives, in order that He may shape us into the likeness of His Son, and grow up good fruit in us. These songs paint scenes of ‘pressing in’ moments – of olive groves, narrow roads, alabaster jars, trees planted by the stream, and scars that speak of healing.

What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?
The best advice I’ve ever been given is to enjoy the process, rather than to always look ahead and wish I was somewhere further down the line. I have found it so rewarding to value the season that I’m in and what the Lord has put right in front of me, and find contentment in simply being obedient to His call in the here and now.

What are your future plans?
My plans for the remainder of 2024 are to release some live acoustic versions of songs from this album, as well as collaborate with various friends locally and overseas on smaller projects. I’d also love to continue sharing my music live and hosting nights of worship and devotion.
