Chandler Moore Opens Up About His Healing Journey in ‘I Checked Into Rehab’

Grammy Award-winning gospel singer and songwriter Chandler Moore, widely known for his work with Maverick City Music, has released ‘I Checked Into Rehab’, a personal song that tells the story of one of the most difficult periods of his life and his journey towards healing.

For someone who began serving in church at just 16 years old and has spent much of his life leading others in worship, the story behind this song makes it even more meaningful.

In a podcast conversation, Moore shared how, at some point, worship had started to feel like a performance to him. He would hear testimonies from people whose lives had been touched and transformed through the songs he ministered, yet he struggled to experience the same thing personally. People were encountering God through his music, but he was finding it difficult to connect with the very words he was singing.

He also spoke about dealing with past hurts, emotional struggles and suicidal thoughts. In November 2023, he made the decision to check himself into a rehabilitation programme, where he spent 40 days getting the help he needed and working through some of the things he had carried for years.

Listening to ‘I Checked Into Rehab’ with this understanding makes the song even more personal. Moore sings about the shame he felt over his past struggles and the pain of being betrayed by people he trusted. You get a sense of just how difficult it must have been for him to open up about these experiences, especially as someone who has spent much of his life ministering to others.

His story also raises an important conversation about those who serve in ministry. Sometimes, the people leading others in worship are themselves struggling. They sing about healing, freedom and restoration, yet behind closed doors, they may be dealing with things they have never had the opportunity or courage to talk about.

For Moore, checking into rehab in 2023 was an important part of facing those struggles rather than continuing to carry them in silence.

Ahead of the release, Moore shared, “My first song about rehab drops tonight.” The word first suggests that there may be more songs to come from this chapter of his life, giving listeners an opportunity to hear more about his experiences through his music.

And perhaps that is what makes this song worth listening to. It is not simply about what he went through, but about his willingness to share a part of his life that he could easily have kept private. His experience is also a reminder that seeking help does not make anyone less of a Christian, regardless of how long they have been in ministry.
