#2: Health & Nutrition! You are what you eat… Nutrition Part 1.

You are what you eat! Part 1

Last month the government released some statistics on obesity in England and have said they hope to improve health and reduce obesity in England by 2020. Here are their statistics:
“In England, most people are overweight or obese. This includes 61.3% of adults and 30% of children aged between 2 and 15. People who are overweight have a higher risk of getting type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers. Excess weight can also make it more difficult for people to find and keep work, and it can affect self-esteem and mental health. Health problems associated with being overweight or obese cost the NHS more than £5 billion every year.”

SHOCKING NEWS!!!! Over 50% of adults in England are classed as obese. Why is this? What are the causes of obesity? Is it reversible? Is dieting the answer?

The reality of it all is looking overweight or not being happy with your figure is the least of your worries when you are overweight or obese. As statistics show, the likelihood of you getting other diseases and health problems are high. Is there hope?! Of course! God never leaves us without hope or a solution.

In the beginning of the Bible God said “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat, Gen 1:29”. Have you ever wondered why God gave them this diet? Let me give an example of how amazing God is.

Let’s take Cashew Nuts for example:
On the outside it just looks like a nut, which you may have once in a blue moon, every week or every day. But let’s research what cashew nuts actually do for our bodies.

I know, you are probably thinking what do all these numbers mean? Let me just pick a few and break it down. Cashew nuts have:

Vitamin/Mineral What is does What does it help to prevent
Calcium Helps to strengthen bones Osteoporosis
Iron Improve blood count Anaemia
Magnesium Helps muscle and nerve function, regulates blood sugar, supports immune system Stokes, high blood pressure, heart attacks
Phosphorus Helps build stronger bones and teeth, maintain PH level, get oxygen to tissues Bone disease and Kidney disease, high blood pressure
Potassium Supports our nervous system and muscles, dissolves excess calcium Strokes, Kidney stones
Sodium Helps to maintain fluid balance  (low sodium) Heart disease, high blood pressure
Zinc Hair and skin health, eyesight, cognitive functions and immune system Colds, improves testosterone production. Some tests show it has a link to anorexia and bulimia
Copper Helps bones, skin and connective tissue Bone and skin disease

Are you beginning to get a picture of why God wanted us to eat fruits, vegetables and seeds? They are bursting with vitamins, nutrients, fiber, proteins and the good carbohydrates and fats. If I could show you this for each fruit and vegetable I would. It is mind blowing just how much God loves us that He provided us with the foods needed to ensure our bodies function correctly and to help prevent disease and sickness.

Don’t forget, God never does anything for His benefit. He produced natural foods for us to eat because He knew it would be of benefit for us. He also gave us the power of choice. We can choose to eat the healthy, nutritious food, or we can choose to eat the unhealthy, non-nutritious foods. Remember, your body is the temple of God 1 Corinthians 6:19. Think with me….. We read in 1 Kings 4 how beautiful God’s temple was that Solomon built and how only the best of the best was brought into His temple. How much more does God want only the best of the best in our bodies, which is also His temple?

Let’s bring it home a bit… You have just bought a new car, nice rims, drives sweet, engine almost soundless. The car cost you a lot of money, but you believed it was worth buying it. You read the manual, the manual says you should put the premium petrol, not the normal petrol in your car in order for it to keep running smoothly and not break down.  Would you spend the extra money and put the best petrol in your car, get it serviced once a year, maybe even twice? I’m sure you would. You wouldn’t want your car to break down and all that money you spent on the car in the first place to go to waste. Is it not the same for our bodies? God bought us at such a big price, the price of His son and He wants only the best to go into our bodies so that we can last long and not get sick or ill.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not asking you to buy the most expensive foods. I’m not asking you to make a drastic change. All I am asking is, you just think about what you are eating, research what you are eat. Remember knowledge is power. Remember your body is God’s temple.
