Music Review: Universal – Galactus Jack

One Man In The Middle brings you regular, unbiased and honest reviews of music albums and EPs from Christian artists and musicians in the UK and worldwide. Here we have Universal by Galactus Jack with an overall review score of 8.9 out of 10.

Album Information:

The brand-new album from Galactus Jack – eight tracks of high-octane EDM (electronic dance music) featuring artists from across the Message family.

Based in Manchester, Galactus Jack is part of the Message Trust, a missional organisation who have been taking the gospel to Manchester and beyond for more than 20 years, primarily through schools outreach and trailblazing evangelistic bands.

With a sound similar to the euphoric pop dance of artists like Calvin Harris and Zedd, and a sprinkling of a Skrillex and Diplo vibe – whether its a crowd of 100 or 10,000, a Galactus Jack show never fails to get the crowd hyped and tuned into God.

Review:

If there were three words to describe these 8 new tracks from Galactus Jack they would be *Modern *Fresh & *Clean. From the opening track “Eternal” there are some great beats that will instantly have you hooked. If you’re up for a bit of a dance then this will certainly get you up on your feet. Each track has it’s own distinctive flavour which means that one track doesn’t simply blend into the next without any difference. These are definitely upbeat and lively and remind me of something from Calvin Harris. With most of the emphasis of the first couple of tracks being on the music I was wondering how you can review the ‘content’ of this album.

Thankfully this thought process was arrested by the vocals which suddenly appear for track 3 “Captured”. This track talks about being the shining light because we have been captured by Gods love. “Antidote” returns the concentration back to the electro dance music. “#SQUAD” see’s Galactus Jack working with one of the best and most current DJs on the Christian scene in the UK – Geek Boy, together they deliver a great track which is very accessible and great to listen to.

Up to this point all of these tracks have been very high energy, fast dance tracks. “Heaven” slows this down momentarily and just for a few short moments the focus is all on the vocal which is provided by Lucy West. As the track title suggests this is about the call of Heaven on us as believers. “Existence” and “Life” finish off the album. “Existence” is purely EDM instrumental pushing into “Life” which is the most lyrical of the tracks on the album. This is fitting as the last track because it leaves the listener in no doubt as to the purpose of this release. This track speaks of there being more to life, choosing a life that means something because we are not just existing.

This might not leave the listener with answers, but if they have been listening then it will leave them with questions. It will also leave them satisfied and probably completely worn out given the high-energy nature of these tracks. With a light beat and some great electro sounds this is a release that is bang up to date for the EDM crowd. If that’s your thing then my suggestion is get this album, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. This is very listener friendly and even though I am not the biggest fan of this style of music when I put my wireless headphones on with this album I was in my own private club of one where no-one could see me dancing around – thankfully!
