Tips for New Artists: A Conversation with Lou Fellingham

Navigating the music industry can be a daunting task, especially for new artists. Fortunately, Lou Fellingham, a seasoned songwriter and worship leader with over 28 years of experience, offers invaluable insights and advice. With ten albums and an internationally recognized ministry, Lou’s distinctive voice and unwavering passion for worship have touched countless lives. We spoke to her about her latest release, a collaboration with Emmanuel Smith titled  ‘Your Name is Wonderful’. Find it on YouTube with timed lyrics and join in for a moment of worship. Lou has more music out shortly featuring Lucy Grimble and Noel Robinson, followed by an album release. The second in 2024!

With such a long and successful ministry, we asked Lou what advice she would give to artists just starting out. Here are her top tips for new artists:

1. Be Consistent, Be Committed

Trust the process. You may be asking yourself ‘is anyone listening? Does anyone care?’ Consistency and commitment are key elements you need to have in spite of how saturated the music industry is today, Lou emphasizes. Success in the music industry doesn’t happen overnight. It requires persistent effort and dedication. Keep honing your craft, stay focused on your goals, and don’t get discouraged by setbacks. Every small step counts.

2. Collaborate with and Support Other Artists

Collaboration is crucial, Lou advises. Working with other artists can spark creativity and open doors to new opportunities. Support each other, share ideas, and create together. The music community thrives on collaboration, and it’s a great way to grow both personally and professionally. I’ve certainly experienced that in my own journey as an artist.

3. Don’t Be Swallowed Up by Comparison or Envy

In an industry filled with talent, it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison. This is something that every artist can relate with. “Don’t let envy or comparison consume you,” Lou warns. “Everyone’s journey is unique. Focus on your own path and celebrate others’ successes without letting it diminish your own.”

4. No One Can Stop What God Will Do Through Your Ministry

“Remember, no one can hinder what God has planned for your ministry,” Lou affirms. Trust in God’s plan and timing. “He has a purpose for you, and nothing can thwart that. Stay faithful and obedient to His calling.”

5. Always Put God First

“Your relationship with God should be your top priority,” Lou stresses. “Be passionate for Him above everything else. Never let your work overshadow your devotion to Him. Trust in His timing and guidance.”

6. Dream Big But Be Mindful Of What’s in Your Hand

I think this was my favourite tip. Recognising that your dreams may be bigger than your budget. Its like a dance of faith, walking that line between going for your dreams but knowing what’s in your bank account isn’t sufficient to fund it, and then settling for less than what you had in mind. I love how she resolves that tension. She advises us to leave it in God’s hand, as it falls within the remit of ‘Not my will but Your will be done’. We need to remember that God is able to take. What’s in our hand and do much more then we can ask or imagine.

Additional Advice from Lou Fellingham:
  • Integrity Matters: “Be full of integrity, even when no one is watching. God sees everything, so don’t compromise your values.”
  • Resilience: “You will face disappointments. Keeping God at the centre helps maintain a soft heart and prevents you from crumbling under pressure.”
  • Identity in Christ: “Your skills and creativity are part of who you are, but they don’t define you. Your identity is first and foremost in Christ.”
  • Keep Short Accounts: “Resolve conflicts quickly and don’t hold onto grudges. It helps maintain healthy relationships.”
  • Take Breaks: “Don’t forget to take holidays and rest. It’s essential for your well-being.”
  • Build a Support System: “Don’t do it alone. Have friends and mentors to cheer you on and provide wisdom and perspective.”
  • Hear God’s Perspective: “Learn to hear your Heavenly Father’s voice over everyone else’s. His guidance is paramount.”

Embrace these tips, keep your focus on God, and trust in His plan for your music ministry. I’m sure you would agree that this conversation has been so full of amazing value, and there will be something in this list for every artist. Personally I love learning from artists who are much further ahead than I am and I try to do this as often as I can. I’m looking forward to Lou’s upcoming releases, I’m sure they’ll be such a blessing.
