Introducing: Singer/Songwriter Abi Jopson with debut single ‘I Owe You’

Continuing to champion new music from both emerging and established artists alike, we are happy to introduce to you 20 year old Plymouth based singer songwriter Abi Jopson with her debut single ‘I Owe You’. Abi names Philippa Hanna as her main inspiration and it’s easy to hear the influence in her music.

Abi explained about her passion, “I love to write, and play music. Ever since I was little, I have been drawn towards all things musical. I started learning to play guitar during my teenage years and I began to love writing music early on. I wrote my very first song with my dad (Tony Jopson) when I was 11. I have been singing with my dad since I can remember and he still plays with me now”.

And about her lyrics Abi went on to say, “Songwriting is a lot more than an emotional outlet for me, it is a way to be real and honest with people about situations in your life and hopefully to be a testimony as a Christian”.

Wanting to know more about this fresh new artist, we got in touch to ask her a few quick questions. Check out the responses below:

What do you think the biggest challenge is for emerging talent these days?
I think that the biggest challenge is getting your music out there as a new artist. It’s easy to get your friends and family to listen to your music but getting other people who don’t know you to listen is a whole new challenge.

Who is your favourite artist at the moment?
My favourite artist is Philippa Hanna as she has such talent and has such God given love and joy. She is one of the reasons I write songs and has been such an inspiration to me!

Who is your favourite female bible character and why?
My favourite female bible character is Esther as she had such faith in God and used her position and gifts to help people even when it seemed impossible. She had courage to step out in faith even when it could have cost her her life. This is something that I aim to do. I would love to use my music for charity projects to help raise money and to be able to support ministries in any way I can using music!

What can you tell us about your future plans for music?
I have a full album coming out this summer with 12 songs on it. I am so excited for everyone to hear it as I have loved writing and producing these songs! Each song was written as a reflection of situations in my life and I hope that my songs can encourage, empower and support people in their lives. Later on in the year I am performing on the main stage at U fest on Plymouth Hoe. I am also supporting Julie Elias in her UK Innocence Tour. Following this I am playing at the Innocence Conference and Pulse where I will be supporting Chip Kendall and L.E.D. I am really excited to see what God has in store for me with my music.
