You may remember the tragic account of Fico Dougan who died of a stab wound in September 2013, after an unprovoked attack by another teenager who is now serving a minimum 14 year sentence. Artists Armstrong Martins, Means of Hope Dealers and Beryl wrote this music tribute titled ‘3 Years On’. Means said in a statement: “In loving memory of those who have been victims to knife crime within my local area Croydon, including Tuggzy who recently passed away as a result of gun crime. All of this was initially inspired by the death of Fico who was stabbed to death 3 years ago ???????? Since his passing, his life has been used as a tool to reach out to many youths in the borough of croydon to get as many of our brothers/sons off the roads & into living a life of purpose, destiny & excellence. To make a change we first make impact in our own surroundings & we’re starting with Croydon. So please help us as we share a positive message of encouragement & remembrance of the loved ones we lost and the lives in 2017 that we are yet to inspire & touch.” Birthed from Fico’s death, a forum, Fico’s World was started for young people to share ideas, discuss issues in the community and to teach change. An article in the Croydon Advertiser, just after the 3rd annual event in memory of the 17 year old stated, “Since the creation of Fico’s World, hundreds of young people in Croydon have stayed away from the “streets” and worked towards setting up new businesses.” Another shining example of what a positive response can do even in the midst of tragedy.
