It may be controversial in Hollywood but ‘Unplanned’, a film about Abby Johnson; the youngest Planned Parenthood director who became pro-life after 22,000 abortions, has soared above Disney’s ‘Dumbo’ debuting at $6.1M. The film is written by the writers of ‘God’s Not Dead’ by Cary Solomon & Chuck Konzelman and has been the rage since release its release.
‘Unplanned’ received an ‘R’ rating from the MPAA who cited “some disturbing/bloody images” in its rationale given for its decision; which has caused many to believe that it’s a way of hindering the films exposure to families; the intention of the film makers to make a PG-13 film. Pure Flix the company that also distributed the film challenged the decision “We consider the MPAA’s current standards to be deeply flawed, insofar as they allow scenes of remarkably graphic sex, violence, degradation, murder and mayhem to have a PG-13 rating, whereas our film, highlighting the grave dangers of abortion in a straightforward manner, is considered dangerous for the American people to view.”
Abby Johnson, however, acknowledged that the R rating may have been assigned for good reason: “We are pushing the boundaries of what has never been before on such a wide scale by showing America exactly what abortion is — and abortion is disturbing. It’s violent… In my opinion, one of the most impactful films of our time is The Passion of the Christ. It was rated R. So I feel like ‘Unplanned’ is in good company. An R rating from the MPAA isn’t going to slow this movie down. I believe people are ready for the truth.” according to Fox News.
The film’s star Ashley Bratcher who played Abby Johnson also spoke of her personal story of abortion which she finds out about during her filming period. Watch below:
