Balé recently released the official video for his single ‘I Am Yours’ which charted 2nd in the StepFWD UK Christian Chart for JULY and we managed to catch up with him for an exclusive interview.
If you didn’t know already, let us to be the first to tell you that Balé can create incredible and captivating music. His single, ‘I Am Yours’ is an obvious example. The acoustic gospel soul artist has been, and is, building up to a release of his album, and its definitely one to look out for.
In the interview we learnt so much about Balé; the person and the artist! Have a read below!
1. When did you first fall in love with music?
From the age of approx 7 my teachers at school discovered my singing gift. They took full advantage by having me represent the school at music festivals in the solo, duets, quartets and choirs categories. At age 13/14 my friend from church played the guitar really well and that build my desire to play the guitar and be as good as him. After church I went to his place and he taught me to play.
After a month, I was able to sing and play a simple song, and from there I continued to practice on my own. A few years later I met a French classical guitarist named Renault and he taught me a few classical guitar techniques, then sent me some books to practice. From that, I was able to win the Trinidad & Tobago Music Festival Classical Guitar category in 2002 & 2004. The rest is history. The love of music continues.
2. What was your inspiration behind your hit single ‘I Am Yours’?
‘I Am Yours’ is the second song I ever wrote. It was written in 2009 when I was going though a very tough time in life and realised that I needed to depend much more on God than I had been up to that point. ‘I Am Yours’ is a song from the heart.
Also Romans 12:1-2 says, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God”.
That simply means, if you/I don’t present ourselves to God, we will never know his will for our lives. Therefore the song ‘I Am Yours’ is a declaration/presentation of myself to God to unlock/prove that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God in my life.
This is my desire for all who adopts the song ‘I Am Yours’ as their own.
3. What can people expect from you in the coming months?
I’ve been working a lot on recording my songs and another 2 singles and videos coming soon, to be followed by an album!
4. In your journey so far, what has been your proudest moment?
The journey thus far has been a dream being realised. Recent performances have had great reviews and I’m really excited about the future.
The proudest moment was having private messages from people who have been really touch and encouraged by ‘I Am Yours’, that’s one of the main desires I have for my music.
My second proudest moment was when my debut single ‘I Am Yours’ chart at #2. Very pleased when I heard!
5. Who is your greatest influence as an artist, and why?
In terms of melody my greatest influence is Stevie Wonder.
In terms of use of chords it would be Agustin Barrios Mangoré, Kirk Franklin and many other artists too numerous to name (I listen to a vast array of music except Heavy Metal)
We’re certainly looking forward to hearing more from Balé, and since ‘I Am Yours’ was only the second song he ever wrote, it will be amazing to see how he has improved since then.
