I love watching people getting their A-level results on the news. I do a happy dance for the ‘super smarties’, you know the ones who do 4 or 5 subjects when everyone knows you only need 3 and conduct a moment of silence for the ones who didn’t do quite as well as they’d hoped. Congratulations or commiserations. Don’t act like you don’t do it too.
There’s always this moment of anticipation when they open the envelope and it could go either way. It could mean they get into the university they’ve been dreaming about or it could mean going home to call the admissions office begging for grace and mercy. Regardless, it’s a pivotal moment and it makes me think of Proverbs 3: 5-6
5. Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding.
6. In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths. (Amplified Version)
I remember opening my results with the quiet confidence that whatever happened, God was in control. Sure I worked hard, but who’s to say that I hadn’t chosen the wrong career path altogether? As believers we have such a privilege in that our Best Friend knows what results we’ll get and He’s not phased by them. Whatever we get, He can work it out.
So, for all the students who just received their results and for all of us in general, it’s good to remember that as long as we keep Jesus central, we can walk through life knowing that He’s leading us along the right path.
Happy planning!
