South London rapper Temzi steps onto the UK scene this year with a fresh sound and edgy content. In his own words he is on a mission “to put real music back on the playlist”. His new offering, ‘The Shoe Express’ Mixtape promises to do just that, showcasing an artist who is full of passion and truth, with a realness to his music that we think you’ll connect with.
Temzi left his ‘road life’ behind him and now in a more positive turn, brings his story into his music with hard hitting, thought-provoking lyrics to take the listener on a journey. A journey that consists of faith, family, society and many issues that impact individuals and the society at large, daily.
On this his debut mixtape, Temzi serves up a generous helping of nostalgic vibes by throwing it all the way back with some 90’s / early 2000’s style classic hip hop beats garnished with his usual blend of clever lyrics and wordplay.
We caught up with the charismatic emerging talent and asked a few questions. Check out his responses below:
1. Can you tell us anything about your future plans for music?
“Right now I’m in the process of releasing a mixtape entitled “The Shoe Express” which will be officially out on February 10th. I’m working on a couple of projects to follow up the mixtape which I’m really looking forward to sharing with you guys. So definitely keep your eyes and ears peeled.”
2. What’s one thing that no one knows about you?
“Hmmmm…Well loads of people know that I’m British/Nigerian but I have never been to Nigeria and only understand a few words in my native language. I know, I know its not good but my parents didn’t speak it to me when I was younger.”
3. Who are you listening to right now?
“Right now I’m totally in love with Jackie Hill Perry. Her ‘Art of Joy’ Album opened my eyes to the high levels rappers can reach. The content, flow and wordplay left me amazed. Herself, Lecrae and Wretch 32 are definitely artists I look up to.”
4. Which of your songs do you feel best represents you?
“Well the song I’ve currently released on Linkup TV entitled ‘The Truth’ represents one side of me. The energetic, hard hitting, in your face side of me, while the ‘Feel It In The Air’ track from the “The Shoe Express” represents the calm side of me. This side of me reflects on my past and how I wish the older more mature me could reach out to the younger me. This side of me also reveals the passion I have for the young people still trapped in the lifestyle I use to live.”
5. What’s the best advice anyone has ever given to you?
“I’m fortunate enough to be surrounded by some very wise, God fearing people. But the the word I always carry with me is, ‘Seek ye first the kingdom of God and everything shall be added on to you’. Keep your eyes solely on God and He will lead you through doors that you never imagined walking through.”
6. What’s your most embarrassing moment?
“Too many to share it would be unfair to pick one. lol”
7. What has been your proudest moment in your journey so far?
“I’ve had many proud moments but the one that started things off is when I got married to my wife. At the time we were quite young and the first amongst our peers to take that bold step of commitment. So yes I have to give that one to my wife.”
8. What is your biggest motivation?
“To please God and give my family everything I never had. I don’t want them to have to learn the same harsh lessons I had to learn. So hopefully as they grow I too can be their motivation and inspiration. And make them proud.”
